No Penokee Mine!

The “No Penokee Mine” T-shirts and posters were printed in 2013-2014 in opposition to
the proposed Penokee Mine in northern Wisconsin. The mine would have leveled sections of the
Penokee mountains and allowed tailings to be dumped in the wetlands – polluting the Bad River, Lake Superior, and the wild rice beds on the Bad River Ojibwa reservation that is located directly downstream. The shirts and posters were sold in Milwaukee and Madison to benefit the Bad River Legal Defense Fund. Today the image stands for a victory. After widespread opposition the mining company withdrew – citing costs and claiming that “the wetlands were wetter than they had expected.”
